As her first new music in six years hit stores yesterday (4/27), fans of multi-platinum and award-winning country singer/songwriter JO DEE MESSINA have embraced the first of three new EPs, “Unmistakable: Love.” On its first day available, the EP--which features seven new songs and two bonus live acoustic tracks--instantly vaulted to the #2 spot on iTunes’ Country Albums chart, even as fans wait for news about a single release. The Unmistakable trilogy will be followed later this year by “Unmistakable: Drive” and “Unmistakable: Inspiration.”
Critics have embraced the EP as well, with the Massachusetts native’s Boston Globe saying, “Her steel-toed voice, smart songwriting instincts, and emotional style put her squarely in Nashville’s sweet spot in the late ’90s and early ’00s… on her first new release in nearly six years Messina continues to be a solid performer. Songs like statement of purpose ‘Welcome to the Rest of My Life’--all sing-song melody and pretty piano--prove that Messina continues to have few peers when it comes to transforming the sloganeering so popular in Music City into believable real-life lyrics. She soars on the nobody-does-it-better balladry of the title track and rhapsodizes about how the right kind of love can make life’s inconveniences, indignities, and injustices a little easier to bear on ‘Hard Life’ (Sarah Rodman, 4/26/10).” Country Weekly said, “…the spunky redhead trades her signature kiss-off tunes such as ‘Bye-Bye’ and ‘That’s The Way Love Is’ for soulful songs dedicated to love in all its forms…Jo Dee’s voice is still powerful, honest and evocative especially on the power ballads ‘I Think About Us’ and ‘Unmistakable’…She may be in love, but Jo Dee hasn’t lost her honest songwriting or powerful pipes (Jessica Phillips, 4/26/10).
